Glossary of terms

Vision: A thing or idea perceived vividly in the imagination.   Imaginative insight or foresight.   Here, a vivid description of an ideal future in a given context.

Strategy: A plan of action or policy in business or politics. Here meaning the intended steps to achieving a vision or set of results

Plan: A formulated and especially detailed method by which a thing is to be done; an intention or proposed proceeding. Here, a scheduling of specific actions on proposed dates, to produce specific results.

Forecasting: Calculating or estimating future events.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP):  The study of how our sensory perceptions and language programme our reality. With NLP skills, we can change the programming, giving people more choice in how to operate and live their lives.


Scenario Planning: First developed in the 1960s at Royal Dutch Shell, involves creating ideally three detailed stories or imagined sequences of events, forecasting likely futures for a given context. These are then used to formulate alternative strategies for succeeding in the likelihood of any one being realised. Usually, plans are made for the one considered most likely to occur.

Coaching: Helping someone learn to maximise their own performance by taking action and learning from results. Here meaning guiding someone's thinking and acting in order to identify and achieve their goals.

Practitioner: A person practising a profession. Here one qualified to operate professionally using Future-basing or NLP (i.e. NLP Practitioner).

Ambition: A strong desire or aspiration. Here meaning for a particular set of future outcomes in a given context.

Outcomes: Results that can be seen, heard and felt.

Goals: The object of a person's ambition or effort.
